PRISON

Between the waves of pain from his sword encased hand, Alexandros thought of ways to slow down Kalidess’s conquest. She may have him, but she might not conquer all of his people. Faking complete obeisance, Alexandros had been allowed out of his room to watch Kalidess run the kingdom from the throne room. He knew he had to do something, and slowly he began to plan. Kalidess finally left, to go do something foul. He forced himself fully awake, using the pain to fuel his awareness, and he crawled to Raithan’s feet.

Raithan laughed at him, “What is it, dog?”

“Please, let me see the dungeons,” he pleaded, kissing the Drinaii’s boot. “Please.”

Raithan laughed, and laughed again. “Finally acting like the dog you are . . . I knew Kalidess would train you right. I suppose you’re worried about your traitor son? He’s not there.”

“Can you be sure?” asked Alexandros hoarsely, as the pain rolled over him again.

“Very,” said Raithan with a snarl. “He slaughtered my men in the tunnels, and one of Kalidess’s favorite servants.” He put the toe of his boot against Alexandros’ chin, and lifted up.

Alexandros met Raithan’s cold, dark eyes, and he shuddered.

“If she didn’t have a use for you yet . . . well, you’re head would no longer be on your shoulders,” said Raithan, tilting Alexandros head back at a painful angle.

Alexandros backed away, and put his head on the ground, abasing himself to the foul Drinaii and hoping for just a few more days of sanity. He grimaced in pain as the movement disturbed his hand and arm encased in the sword’s fiery metal. “I just need to see the prisoners, the traitors to my kingdom, one last time with my own eyes,” he said.

Raithan sighed with pleasure. “I love it when the smart ones realize their folly of dealing with Kalidess. Your struggle against her powers is all the more sweet when you recognize the futility. The dumb ones rarely ever realize what’s going to happen to them until they are at the edge of being wholly consumed.”

Alexandros let Raithan gloat, and just waited, trying to look pitiful and weak, which wasn’t that hard considering he hadn’t been able to move much in the last few days as he dealt with the pain. He fought the sword’s control over him as much as he could, but he could feel the tendrils of the strange fiery metal reaching up to his shoulder and down his side. Soon, they would solidify and send out more tendrils. He didn’t want to think about what would happen when they reached his head or his heart. He groveled on the floor, keeping his head down and hoping that Raithan would acquiesce to his request while the sorceress was gone on her errand. Raithan wasn’t nearly as clever as he thought he was.

“All right, sniveling dog,” Raithan sneered. “You can go to the dungeons. I wish I had time to go with you and watch you snuff all their hopes,
